3 Major Causes of Engine Failure

So you’re stuck on the side of the road, smoke billowing out from under the hood. What on earth could have possibly gone wrong? There are multiple issues that can cause engine failure and this article will explore 3 of the most common reasons engines fail. If you want to prevent these things from happening to you be sure to provide your car with proper auto maintenance and repair!

Improper Lubrication

One of the most common causes of catastrophic engine failure is not ensuring the engine is getting the oil that it needs. Even if you change the oil on a regular basis, if you don’t check other parts for wear and tear, you could end up needing a new or used engine replacement for your car. The most common causes of engine oil starvation are a faulty oil pump, high mileage wear and tear, which results in an excessive gap between the main and rod bearings, or not changing the oil and oil filter as scheduled.

Overheating

Overheating means exactly what it sounds like, the engine heats up too much and causes parts to fail. This usually happens because of some sort of coolant leak that could be coming from the radiator or a hose connected to the coolant system, or even the engine itself. However other causes of overheating could include a bad waterpump, a faulty electric cooling fan, or a bad thermostat. It is important to have your cooling system flushed according to your vehicle manufacturer’s mileage schedule so that a mechanic can ensure the system is is good shape and is properly keeping your engine cool.

Detonation

This type of engine failure is caused by abnormal combustion inside the engine that produces excessive heat and pressure in the combustion chamber. Fuel is spontaneously combusting when it should not be, which produces the heat, as well as a knocking noise. At the top of the list of reasons for this happening is the loss of the exhaust gas recirculation system. This system ensure the air/fuel mixture is correct when the engine is operating. However it can also be caused by bad ignition timing, incorrect spark plugs, low octane fuel or elevated engine operating temperature.

To avoid these issues be sure to keep up with your regular maintenance schedule because unfortunately these types of problems can cause major engine damage that may result in the need for a new engine for your vehicle.
